How much does a fractional CTO cost in 2026

If your business runs on software and nobody senior owns the technology, the question comes up sooner or later: do we need a CTO, and what would one cost?

A full-time CTO in the US costs well over $250,000 a year once salary, benefits and recruiting are added up. Most growing businesses can't justify that, and many don't need it yet.

A fractional CTO is the middle ground: a senior technical leader who works with you part of the time, for a monthly fee.

The short answer, at the end of 2026:

  • Most US fractional CTOs charge $8,000 to $25,000 a month, according to published 2026 price guides.
  • A full-time US CTO costs roughly $270,000 to $320,000+ a year in salary and benefits, before recruiting fees and equity.
  • At abZ Global, prices start at $2,000 for a single decision, $3,500 a month for an advisor and $7,500 a month for a part-time CTO. An embedded CTO starts at $15,000 a month.

I've been building software since 2010. I was fractional CTO and lead developer for BLAK International, a private aviation company, from 2022 to April 2026, and in 2026 I took on the same role for Spare Space, a marketplace. I also build my own AI product, SelfManager.ai, which has more than 350,000 lines of code in production.

This article is what I tell business owners when they ask what technical leadership costs, and which kind they actually need.

What a Fractional CTO Actually Does

A fractional CTO does the job of a chief technology officer for part of the month. For a business owner, that usually means:

  • Making the big technical decisions: platforms, architecture, build or buy, and when a rebuild is worth it.
  • Checking the work and the quotes of your developers and agencies, so you know what you're paying for.
  • Keeping security, data and access under control, including who has the keys to what.
  • Planning the technical roadmap with you, in business terms, not jargon.
  • Hiring and leading developers, or managing the agency that does the work.

The difference from a consultant is ownership. A consultant hands you a report and leaves. A fractional CTO stays, makes the decisions with you and answers for how they turn out.

And it isn't a cheaper developer. You're paying for judgment: knowing what to build, what not to build, and what will break before it breaks.

What Fractional CTOs Charge in the US

Published 2026 price guides land in roughly the same range. The fee follows how involved the CTO is:

How involvedTypical monthly fee
Light: regular advice and reviews$8,000 – $12,000
Part-time leadership: owns the technical direction$12,000 – $20,000
Deep: close to embedded in the team$18,000 – $25,000+

Source: Tristella Advisors, July 2026. A June 2026 guide from Fractionus puts most US retainers between $9,000 and $22,000 a month, with established CTOs typically charging $13,000 to $16,000.

One-off work, like a technical audit or an architecture review, is usually priced separately. Tristella puts those at $8,000 to $15,000.

Two things to keep in mind about these numbers:

  • Most of them come from firms that sell fractional CTO services. Treat them as a guide to the market, not a rule.
  • The title doesn't set the price. The size of your system, how much leadership you need and the experience of the person do.

What a Full-Time CTO Really Costs

Most owners compare a fractional CTO with a full-time hire. Here's what the full-time option looks like in the US:

  • Salary: Built In puts the average US CTO base salary at $224,550 (2026, as cited by Fractionus). The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $175,140 (May 2025) for computer and information systems managers, the group that includes CTOs. Senior CTO roles pay more.
  • Benefits and payroll costs: about 30% on top of wages, based on BLS employer cost data.
  • Recruiting: executive search fees typically run 20–25% of first-year salary.
  • Equity: at startups, usually on top of all of that.

Added up, a full-time CTO costs roughly $270,000 to $320,000 or more a year: about $22,500 to $26,700 a month, before recruiting fees and equity (Fractionus).

That's money well spent once you have a large engineering team that needs daily leadership. Before that point, most businesses get more from senior judgment part of the time, and keep the difference for building the product.

Fractional CTO Prices at abZ Global

Our prices are published on our pricing page. Here's what each level is for:

LevelPriceWhat you get
One decisionFrom $2,000A hire, an agency quote, a platform choice or a rebuild question, answered in one written recommendation.
Technical ReviewFrom $3,500A senior review of the parts that carry the risk: architecture, critical code, infrastructure, security and vendor quotes. A written report with costs, and a call to go through it.
Deep reviewFrom $7,500The same, for several apps, a very large codebase or a security-focused review.
Advisor$3,500 a monthA weekly call, answers between calls, and review of the changes that matter.
Part-time CTO$7,500 a monthSets the technical direction while your team or agency does the work: roadmap, architecture, hiring, vendors. A seat in your planning.
Embedded CTOFrom $15,000 a monthRuns engineering with you day to day: priorities, code reviews and releases, and code where it counts.
Product team, led by Marian$40,000 – $100,000+ a monthA dedicated team sized to your roadmap, with me leading architecture, priorities, code review and releases.

A few terms that matter to owners:

  • Monthly engagements run month to month, with 30 days' notice. No long contract to get out of.
  • The Technical Review is credited in full if you book a build or a CTO month within 60 days.
  • Reviews are priced after a first look at the size of your system, so you know the number before we start.

What Changes the Price

Whoever you hire, these are the things that move a fractional CTO's fee up or down:

The size and state of your system

A new product with a clean start is simpler than years of code from three different agencies. The more there is to understand, the more senior time it takes.

How much leadership you need

Answering questions and reviewing decisions is one job. Running engineering every day is another. The levels above exist because businesses need very different amounts of help.

Who does the work

Leading your own developers, managing an outside agency and supervising an app built with AI tools are three different jobs. The last one is increasingly common, and it needs someone who can tell what the AI got right and what it didn't.

Risk

Payments, health data, personal data and anything security-sensitive raise the stakes, and the care needed to get them right.

The Cost of Not Having One

The fee is easy to see. The cost of missing technical leadership is harder to see, but it shows up again and again in the rescue projects that come to us:

  • A rebuild, because the first version was built on the wrong foundation.
  • Agency quotes nobody could check, and invoices for work nobody reviewed.
  • An app built fast with AI tools that works in the demo and breaks with real customers.
  • Security holes found by attackers instead of by your own team.
  • Code, servers and accounts controlled by a developer who's no longer around.

A single avoided rebuild can cost more than a year of part-time technical leadership.

How to Choose the Right Level

Start from where your business is today:

  • One big decision in front of you (a hire, a platform, an agency quote): One decision.
  • Not sure what you have, or whether it's safe: a Technical Review.
  • A developer or agency you'd like a senior eye on: Advisor.
  • Nobody owns the technical side and you need direction: Part-time CTO.
  • Developers, but nobody leading them: Embedded CTO.
  • A product to build, with leadership included: the Product team.

If you can't tell which one fits, that's normal. Most clients start with a decision or a review, and the right level becomes obvious from there.

When You Don't Need a Fractional CTO

Not every business needs one.

If your website is a standard marketing site on a common platform, and nothing about it is custom, a good developer is enough. If you have a strong technical co-founder, you need them, not an outside CTO.

You need a fractional CTO when the technology has become important to the business, but the decisions about it are being made by people who can't fully judge them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a fractional CTO cost per month in 2026?

In the US, most fractional CTOs charge between $8,000 and $25,000 a month, depending on how involved they are. At abZ Global, monthly plans start at $3,500 for an advisor, $7,500 for a part-time CTO and $15,000 for an embedded CTO.

Is a fractional CTO cheaper than a full-time CTO?

Usually, by a wide margin. A full-time US CTO costs roughly $270,000 to $320,000+ a year in salary and benefits before recruiting fees and equity. A fractional CTO gives you senior judgment for a fraction of that, as long as you don't need someone leading a large team every day.

How is a fractional CTO different from a consultant or an agency?

A consultant advises and leaves. An agency builds what it's asked to build. A fractional CTO sits on your side of the table: makes the technical decisions with you, checks the agency's work and quotes, and stays accountable for the result.

Can a fractional CTO work with our existing developers or agency?

Yes, and that's one of the most common setups. The Part-time CTO sets the direction and reviews the changes that matter, while your team or agency keeps doing the work.

Do we have to sign a long contract?

Not with us. Monthly engagements run month to month, with 30 days' notice.

Does a fractional CTO write code?

It depends on the level. An advisor or part-time CTO mostly decides and reviews. An Embedded CTO also writes code where it counts. With the Product team, a dedicated team builds the product and I lead it.

Can we start small?

Yes. One decision starts at $2,000 and a Technical Review at $3,500. The review is credited in full if you book a build or a CTO month within 60 days.

We built our app with AI tools. Is a fractional CTO useful?

Very. Apps built quickly with AI tools often work well in a demo and hide problems in security, data and structure. A Technical Review shows what's solid, what's risky, and what it costs to make the app ready for real customers.

Do you work with companies outside the US?

Yes. We've worked with US businesses since 2014, and we work with companies anywhere.
